CMA CGM 182 TEU Pure Electric Container Vessel
This vessel, built by Shandong Xinneng Shipbuilding for French shipping giant CMA CGM, represents China's first ever export of a pure electric inland container ship, marking a historic breakthrough in the Chinese electric vessel industry's expansion into the global market. Owned by the world's third-largest container shipping line, the vessel measures 79.9 meters in length with a maximum deadweight of 3,500 tonnes. It is powered exclusively by four containerized, swappable battery units supplied by CATL, each rated at 1,959 kWh. The vessel achieves a pure electric range of up to 240 km, with zero fuel consumption, ultra-low noise, and zero carbon emissions throughout navigation.
Upon delivery, the vessel will operate a 180 km round‑trip green route in Vietnam, connecting Binh Duong Province to the Gemalink deep‑sea terminal in Cai Mep, with NIKE committed to using it for transporting its products, thereby creating a "factory‑port‑global" zero‑carbon and closed‑loop logistics ecosystem. The vessel is expected to transport over 50,000 TEU annually and reduce CO₂ emissions by 778 tons each year. Further enhancing its green credentials, the vessel will be recharged using 100% certified renewable electricity generated by a dedicated 1 GWh solar farm at the Gemalink terminal. Notably, the entire vessel was co‑designed by CMA CGM’s newbuild and R&D teams in close partnership with CATL for the battery technology. CATL, therefore, played an absolutely pivotal role in enabling this zero‑emission breakthrough, providing the core technological foundation that made the entire project possible.
