The “Hydrogen-Electric Tug 1,” commissioned at Qingdao Port in June 2025, is China’s first hydrogen‑hybrid tugboat and the most powerful port tug with the largest battery capacity in the country. Powered by CATL‘s 7,838.88 kWh high‑safety LFP marine battery system (achieving a domestic record energy density of 140 Wh/kg) and a 1,800 kW hydrogen fuel cell, the vessel operates in a series‑hybrid “hydrogen‑lithium” dual‑power mode. The CATL battery delivers instant high‑power output for frequent stop‑start and peak load operations, while the fuel cell provides sustained power. CATL’s NP (No Propagation) thermal runaway prevention technology, proprietary BMS, and liquid‑cooling thermal management ensure millisecond‑level safety control under demanding port conditions. With a maximum output of 5,200 kW from the battery, the tug achieves a bollard pull of 82 tonnes and a speed of 14.2 knots. The “Hydrogen-Electric Tug 1” was recognized as a 2025 innovative product by China’s shipbuilding industry association.
